The Old Mutual Zimbabwe Girls Under-18 rugby team will on Monday seek to build on their last year performance to make an impressive start of the annual ‘National Girls Under-18 Week’ Tournament happening in Kimberly, South Africa from the 4th to the 8th of July 2016.
Zimbabwe’s first match against SA side SWD, is expected to commence at 1400 hrs. Results of the opening matches will determine the teams’ next opponent in the second round of matches to be played on Wednesday before the finals on Friday.
Team Coach, Nsikelelo ‘Sykes’ Sibanda hopes his side will rise to the occasion after a weeks’ camp at Goromonzi High School.
“I think our preparations this year have been better compared to last year. We have had more time together to finalise preparations in camp. I am very happy with the material of players in the team, there is lots and lots of talent,” he explained.
Sibanda who seems to be impressed by the girls’ performances during camp, will be banking on four players from last year to use their experience for a great show.
Captain Thubelihle Tshuma from Goromonzi High School, Harare Girls High School sisters, Karen and Koreen Muchabaiwa and Bulawayo’s Amhlophe student Gugulethu Dube were part of the team that made a respectable debut last year; winning two out of their three matches. The girls go into the tournament ranked fourth in the 16-team-showdown at Northern Cape High School on Monday.
The Zimbabwean team will be joining 15 other South African teams that will be taking part in the tournament.
